Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) are among India's most prestigious government residential schools. Run by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education, JNVs provide 100% free CBSE education, hostel accommodation, meals, uniforms, and textbooks to talented students from rural India.
Admission to Class 6 and Class 9 is conducted exclusively through a competitive entrance examination called the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST). In this guide, we break down the eligibility rules, 75% rural reservation quota, test pattern, and preparation tips.
1. The 75% Rural Reservation Mandate
Unlike standard central schools, Navodaya Vidyalayas were specifically created to nurture rural talent. By law, at least 75% of the seats in each district are strictly reserved for students studying in rural schools.

3. Eligibility Criteria for Class 6 Applicants
- Age Limit: The child must be born within the prescribed date of birth window specified in the official notification (generally between 10 to 12 years of age on May 1 of the admission year).
- Continuous Schooling: The candidate must have passed Classes 3 and 4 without repeating a class, and must be currently enrolled in Class 5 in a government or government-recognized school in the same district.
- One Attempt Rule: A candidate is permitted to appear for the JNVST selection test only once in a lifetime. Re-appearing by forging birth dates or Class 5 enrollment leads to immediate disqualification.
4. How to Apply Online
- Visit the official NVS portal at
navodaya.gov.in. - Click on "Link for Class VI Online Application Form".
- Download the Certificate Form to be signed by the child's current Class 5 Headmaster/Principal.
- Upload the child's photograph, parent's signature, child's signature, and the signed headmaster certificate.
- Submit the online form and keep a printed copy of the registration number for admit card download.
